Echo Beach are a Dundee based Musical Duo. Elaine Carlin and Paul McGregor formed the duo only last year and they have been entertaining us ever since! With exciting and upbeat live performances covering a variety of our favourite songs, the talented pair have been nothing but successful. After chatting to Elaine and Paul, we find out what inspired the Duo, who sings in the shower… and what’s next for Echo Beach? Here’s how it went.
Echo Beach – Interview with Sasha B
What first got you both into music?
Paul: For me, it was an exact moment. I was listening to the John Peel show on radio 1 and heard ‘Spinal Scratch’ for the first time. An amazing E.P, and it still affects me when I listen to it now.
Elaine: My memories are of hearing Mum & Dad playing their records and being introduced to The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and many others. Those memories have never left me and I am thankful for that legacy.
How did the duo form?
Paul has been in and around the Dundee scene for a long time and the opportunity arose when Elaine stood in for the singer in a duo, which Paul was involved with was on holiday. The reaction was amazing and we went from there. As of September 2019, we formed Echo Beach as a separate entity and since then it’s been amazingly successful.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Fundamentally it’s fun. We love what we do and that comes across when we play.
which celebrity would you most like to collaborate with if given the chance?
Paul: No If’s, but’s or maybe’s…Paul McCartney.
Elaine: coming from Dundee, I wish I’d had the chance to work with some amazing artists from our city, but none other than the amazing Billy Mackenzie.
What is the main message you want to give to those who follow your music?
We’re both of the same mind. Come and see us live, enjoy it and leave having had a great time and a sing-along.
Love what you do and it will never seem like work.
Who sings in the shower and what songs do you sing?
Paul: Hmm mm, sorry, Don’t sing in the shower I’m afraid, but I’ve always got radio 4 and LBC on the radio.
Elaine: Yeah, I’m a BIG shower singer. Usually big ol’ cheesy stuff like Julie Andrews – ‘Favourite things’ and Men at work – ‘Down Under.’
How has lockdown affected you and what has it meant for your music?
Obviously like all gigging musicians, we’ve been shut down since the 23rd March, but we have used this time productively to hone and update our set so that we are ready to kick back in once this awful time is over.
What is your favourite song to perform as a duo and why?
It’s a no brainer. We both live singing ‘Sunstitute’ by the band Clout. It’s just a great pop song and such fun to sing and play.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Paul: it doesn’t matter what happens. If something goes wrong at a gig, there is always a plan B.
Elaine: Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on yourself and what you want to achieve…. and have a bloomin’ good time doing it.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
A good start would be a large increase in wages…. Ha! We would like to see pressure taken off young people to feel they have to look a certain way to be successful. We would love to see more encouragement to be comfortable being yourself and concentrate more on the music.
What is next for Echo Beach?
It’s going to be a huge challenge to get back to any sense of normality for everyone in the hospitality sector in what’s left of 2020, but we are optimistic about 2021 and what it will bring to all the musicians and entertainers in our industry. As for Echo Beach we will always reach for the stars and achieve all that we possibly can. Watch this space folks!
